機體的免疫細胞和非免疫細胞能合成和分泌小分子的多肽類因子，它們調節多種細胞生理功能，這些因子統稱為細胞因子（cytokines）。細胞因子包括淋巴細胞產生的淋巴因子和單核巨噬細胞產生的單核因子等。目前已知interleukin,IL，interferon,IFN、集落刺激因子（colony stimulating factor,CSF）、腫瘤壞死因子（tumor necrosis factor,TNF）、轉化生長因子（transforming growth foctor,TGF-β）等均是免疫細胞產生的細胞因子。
生長因子（GF）是一類可調節、促進細胞生長的細胞因子，主要包括轉化生長因子-β（TGF-β）、表皮生長因子（EGF）、血管內皮生長因子（VEGF）、成纖維細胞生長因子（FGF）、神經生長因子（NGF）、血小板衍生的生長因子（PDGF）、肝細胞生長因子（HGF）。
許多未以生長因子命名的細胞因子也具有刺激細胞生長的作用。如IL-2是T細胞的生長因子，TNF是成纖維細胞的生長因子。某些生長因子在一定條件下可表現出對免疫應答的抑制效應，如TGF-β可抑制Tc細胞的成熟和巨噬細胞的激活。
