真核細胞 eukaryotic cell 指含有真核（被核膜包圍的核）的細胞。其染細菌體數在一個以上，能進行有絲分裂。還能進行原生質流動和變形運動。而光合作用和氧化磷酸化作用則分別由葉綠體和線粒體進行。除細菌和藍藻植物的細胞以外，所有的動物細胞以及植物細胞都屬于真核細胞。由真核細胞構成的生物稱為真核生物。原始真核細胞大約在12～16億年前出現，現存的種類繁多，有些真核細胞極為原始，如渦鞭毛蟲（甲藻），真核生物包括大量的單細胞生物或原生生物，全部多細胞生物。凡是真核細胞構成的有機體現在統稱為真核生物。細胞一般比較微小，需要用顯微鏡才能看見，通常以μm計算其大小。但也有少數例外，如一些鳥卵（不包括蛋清），直徑可達幾個cm。細胞的形態結構與機能也是多種多樣的（圖1—1）。游離的細胞多為圓形或橢圓形，如血細胞和卵；緊密連接的細胞有扁平、方形、柱形等；具有收縮機能的肌細胞多為紡錘形或纖維形；具有傳導機能的神經細胞則為星形，多具長的突起。細胞雖然形形細菌，但是它們在形態結構與機能上又有共同的特征。[1] 
由于結構、功能和所處的環境不同，各類細胞形態千差萬別，有圓形、橢圓形、柱形、方形、多角形、扁形、梭形，甚至不定形。
原核細胞的形狀常與細胞外沉積物（如細胞壁）有關，如細菌細胞呈棒形，球形，弧形、螺旋形等不同形狀。單細胞的動物或植物形狀更復雜一些，如草履蟲像鞋底狀，眼蟲呈梭形且帶有長鞭毛，鐘形蟲呈袋狀。
高等生物的細胞形狀與細胞功能和細胞間的相互關系有關。如動物體內具有收縮功能的肌肉細胞呈長條形或長梭形；紅細胞為圓盤狀，有利于O2和CO2的氣體交換。植物葉表皮的保衛細胞成半月形，2個細胞圍成一個氣孔，以利于呼吸和蒸騰。細胞離開了有機體分散存在時，形狀往往發生變化，如平滑肌細胞在體內成梭形，而在離體培養時則可成多角形。
大小
一般說來，真核細胞的體積大于原核細胞，卵細胞大于體細胞。大多數動植物細胞直徑一般在20~30μm間。
